Scholarships

Prizes and Scholarships 

 

The Department offers Scholarships/Prizes to encourage outstanding students in chemistry.  No applications are necessary and the awards are given based on students’ grades and academic merit at the end of each academic year.  The amount/value of the respective scholarships/prizes are for reference only and may increase.

 

Dick Arthur Memorial Prize in Chemistry ($2,800)

The Prize is awarded to the most distinguished organic chemistry student in the final year of studies.

 

Douglas Payne Prizes in Chemistry

(i) $1,200 for the best Chemistry student majoring in Chemistry, among those completing the BSc 2nd year

(ii) $1,200 for the best Chemistry student in Analytical Chemistry, among those completing the final year of BSc

 

G.T. Byrne Memorial Prize in Chemistry ($5,000)

The Prize is awarded to the best Chemistry student, among those completing the final year of BSc program.

 

Cheung King Pak Memorial Scholarship ($10,000)

The scholarship shall be awarded annually to one second year student studying in the Department of Chemistry on the basis of academic merit as shown in the first year of the degree curriculum with recommendation from the Department.

 

Dorothy Collins Memorial Scholarships ($10,000)

The scholarship shall be awarded annually to a Chemistry major student entering the second year of the B.Sc. curriculum who intends to remain as Chemistry major student in the third and fourth years, and maintains an overall GPA of 3.0 or above for each year of study. The value of the scholarship to be awarded shall be $10,000 p.a. The scholarship shall be tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and fulfillment of above.

 

Mak Kai Hung Memorial Scholarships ($10,000)

The scholarship shall be awarded annually to a Chemistry major student studying the third year of the B.Sc. 4-year curriculum on the basis of academic merit (with GPA of 3.3 or above) as shown in the overall results of the examinations or assessments of the courses taken in the third year of the B.Sc. degree. The awardee shall carry out undergraduate research in a research group in the Department of Chemistry in the summer of the academic year.

 

Norman Chui Scholarship ($5,000)

(i) a final year undergraduate studying a degree program under the Faculty of Science with not less than 50% of his/her curriculum courses taken from courses offered by the Department of Chemistry. The award shall be made on the basis of academic merit (with GPA of 3.60 or above, or its equivalent in case of letter grades) as shown in the overall results of the examinations or assessments of the courses taken in the third year of the said program, not less than 50% of which should consist of courses offered by the Department of Chemistry;

(ii) a graduate of the Faculty of Science with not less than 70% of his curriculum courses in the final year taken from courses offered by the Department of Chemistry. The award shall be made on the basis of the academic merit (with a GPA of 3.60 or above, or its equivalent in case of letter grades) as shown in the overall results of the examinations or assessments of the courses taken in the final year of the B.Sc. degree.

 

Rayson Huang Scholarships ($10,000)

One scholarship shall be awarded annually to a Chemistry major student entering the third year of B.Sc. curriculum on the basis of academic merit in the second year of study. The scholarship shall be renewed subject to satisfactory academic progress.

 

Vacoas II Trust Scholarships ($10,000)

Two scholarships shall be awarded annually to Chemistry major students entering the second year of the B.Sc. curriculum who intend to remain as Chemistry major students in the third and fourth years, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or above for each year of study. The value of the scholarships to be awarded shall each be $10,000 p.a. The scholarships shall be tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and fulfillment of above.
