Title:
Small rings for the synthesis of alkaloids, heterocycles and alkenes
Speaker:
Dr. Karl Hemming
Department of Physical and Life Sciences
University of Huddersfield
Abstract:
1-Azetines and their reactivity towards cyclopropenones, the smallest of the aromatic rings, will be the focus of this presentation. The talk will describe how to synthesise these and related small ring systems, and how these small rings can then be used to make alkenes, oxadiazoles, pyridines, quinolines, indolizidines, pyrrolizidines, aza-sugars, homotropanes and other alkaloid and heterocyclic targets.

Title:
Bond Forming Reactions Promoted by an Aluminyl Anion
Speaker:
Prof. Martyn Coles
School of Chemical and Physical Sciences
Victoria University of Wellington
Abstract:
In 2008, the first report of the aluminyl anion completed the family of low-valent anions of the group 13 elements. We have been studying the synthesis and reactivity of a family of aluminyl anions and will discuss several examples of reactivity of these species, focusing on their ability to activate small molecules towards bond forming reactions.
