Abstract:
Clostridioides difficile is a leading cause of hospital acquired infections worldwide. The disease is characterized by massive inflammation driven by C. difficile toxins. This inflammation in turn leads to recruitment of host innate immune proteins involved in sequestering nutrient metals from C. difficile in a process known as nutritional immunity. In this talk I will discuss how C. difficile responds to the robust nutritional immune response generated in the gut to acquire nutrient metals during infection. These findings have revealed new targets for potential therapeutic intervention against this important infectious threat.
